When Forward Feels Hard

When Forward Feels Hard

Forward is where the answers are. Forward is where the horse can settle and find his balance – and in most cases, the rider can stick with him. (It’s hard to stick with “Exit, stage left!”).

And forward is the essential element in traveling straight and making balanced turns, particularly carrying a rider.

Horses who haven’t been conditioned “forward,” (that doesn’t mean fast or zoom ahead), quickly lose confidence.

It often happens when a horse has been handled by someone who’s afraid of him or his energy. Instead of developing self-confidence, he learns to hesitate, to stop with his head up, ready to back up or be scolded. It’s like he’s waiting to get in trouble.

People can develop unsureness and freeze up, too. Worries, setbacks, critical voices—those things can make us hold back or show up smaller than we are.
